High-tunnel shade cloth
Growers search for high-tunnel shade cloth, hoop-house shade percentage, and 30% or 50% greenhouse mesh when July heat sits on the 6-mil film. This page compares live Amazon panels and a 40% roll — 30%, 40%, 50%, and 70% — plus lock-grip clips. It is not a commercially manufactured kit and not a USDA payment schedule.
Featured Amazon prices copied 9 September 2026, about 03:26 UTC. A missing featured price stays an em dash. Ratings are not copied. Shade-density language below is from Purdue Extension HO-327-W, fetched tonight. EQIP language is the structure-only wording already on what EQIP will not pay for. No USDA payment dollar is invented here.
Kit index: commercially manufactured kits. 6-mil film: high-tunnel plastic replacement. Drip parts: high-tunnel drip irrigation. Tomatoes: high-tunnel tomatoes. Strawberries: high-tunnel strawberries. Cut flowers: high-tunnel cut flowers. Winter lettuce: high-tunnel winter lettuce. Ventilation / HAF / exhaust: high-tunnel ventilation fans. Insect / exclusion netting (HTPE shade is large-moth exclusion, not Cornell 80-gram): high-tunnel insect netting. Zone 4 vs zone 8: high tunnel USDA zone 4 vs zone 8. Lock channel that holds cloth and film: high-tunnel wiggle wire. Size map: high-tunnel sizes. County inspection: EQIP checklist.
What shade percent means
The number on the bag is how much incoming light the manufacturer says the cloth blocks. It is not a promise that the tunnel will drop a stated number of degrees. Purdue's greenhouse temperature bulletin treats shade as a way to cut solar radiation — and warns that the same cloth also cuts light the crop still needs.
Indiana growers should use a shade cloth that can reduces light intensity by 30 to 50 percent to ensure optimal light levels for plants, while reducing radiation load for cooling.Source: Purdue Extension HO-327-W — Temperature Control in Greenhouses (February 2021). Fetched 9 September 2026. The bulletin is written for greenhouses; it is not a high-tunnel payment schedule.
However, shading method should be used only when greenhouse cooling by other methods (see below) is not effective. This is because the shade cloth reduces light intensity needed for normal plant growth.Source: Purdue Extension HO-327-W — Temperature Control in Greenhouses (February 2021).
The light requirement can be higher (15 to 18 moles per square meter) for vegetable crops, such as tomatoes and peppers.Source: Purdue Extension HO-327-W — Temperature Control in Greenhouses (February 2021). Same bulletin: 10–12 moles per square meter for general greenhouse quality; 20–25 moles inside an unshaded Indiana greenhouse on a bright day.
Leafy greens and tomatoes both sit under the same film. The Purdue 30–50% band is a light-and-cooling compromise for Indiana summers, not a national crop table. A 70% panel is listed below because growers search it — it is denser than that band.
EQIP pays for the structure, not the cloth
Shade cloth is an add-on after the commercially manufactured kit is up. The national High Tunnel System Initiative FAQ keeps financial assistance on the structure itself.
Under the High Tunnel System Initiative, financial assistance is provided only for the structure itself. Electricity, venting systems, lighting, etc. can be installed providing the additions meets manufacturer’s designs and specifications. However, the grower is responsible for those costs.Source: USDA NRCS High Tunnel System Initiative FAQ (Updated November 2024; Oregon-branded).
Electricity, venting, and lighting sit on the grower in that FAQ. Shade cloth is the same kind of add-on. Rules vary; call your county NRCS office.

Cloth over film, not instead of film
- 30% (B0G2VF1SNV). vensovo 12 × 20 reflective Aluminet. The lightest density in this table; still a panel, not a 30-foot gothic roof.
- 40% (B093GF27NM, B0BKL1S767, B0BDBNX8Z5). A 12 × 20 panel, a 20 × 48 rectangle, and a 6 × 100 roll. Measure the hoop arc. A 20-foot-wide sheet is not automatically a 20-foot gothic cover.
- 50% (B08SM667NG, B00LO0JPHO). vensovo 12 × 20 and Agfabric 12 × 20 with clips. The top of the Purdue 30–50% band.
- 70% (B09BKNGLPQ). Kesfitt 10 × 20. Denser than the Purdue cooling band. Listed because growers search it, not because this page recommends it for tomatoes.
- Clips (B097SRJFDR). 50-pack lock-grip. Grommeted panels still need something to tie to the bow or baseboard.
FAQ
- What does a 30%, 40%, or 50% shade cloth actually do?
- The percentage on the listing is the shade density the manufacturer printed — how much incoming light the cloth is sold as blocking, not a temperature drop we measured. Purdue Extension HO-327-W says Indiana growers should use a shade cloth that reduces light intensity by 30 to 50 percent to keep usable light while cutting radiation load for cooling. A 70% cloth is denser than that band. Ratings are not copied here.
- When do growers put shade cloth on a high tunnel?
- Summer heat, and crops that still need a lot of light — HO-327-W names tomatoes and peppers as wanting 15 to 18 moles per square meter per day, and says shading should be used only when other cooling is not enough because cloth also cuts light plants need. The cloth sits over the 6-mil film already on the house; it is not a replacement for that film. This page does not invent a degrees-Fahrenheit drop.
- Does EQIP pay for shade cloth?
- No shade-cloth dollar is copied here. The High Tunnel System Initiative FAQ (Updated November 2024) says financial assistance is provided only for the structure itself, and that the grower is responsible for add-on costs such as electricity, venting, and lighting. Shade cloth is the same kind of add-on. Tunnel Spec does not invent USDA dollars. Rules vary; call your county NRCS office.
- Which Amazon shade cloths are on this page?
- Eight live listings fetched 9 September 2026, about 03:26 UTC: vensovo 30% 12×20 Aluminet (B0G2VF1SNV, $55.99), vensovo 40% 12×20 (B093GF27NM, $30.99), vensovo 50% 12×20 (B08SM667NG, $31.99), Agfabric 12×20 50% with clips (B00LO0JPHO, $33.99), Kesfitt 70% 10×20 (B09BKNGLPQ, $29.99), winemana 40% 20×48 (B0BKL1S767, $64.99), WindscreenSupplyCo 6×100 40% roll (B0BDBNX8Z5, $69.95), and 50-pack shade-cloth clips (B097SRJFDR, $7.99). A missing featured price would stay an em dash.
- Do I still need lock channel if the cloth has grommets?
- Grommets and lock-grip clips (B097SRJFDR) are how these Amazon panels are titled to attach. The 6-mil polyethylene on the house still uses spring wire and lock channel on the plastic-replacement page. Shade cloth is a second layer for summer, not a substitute for that film or for a commercially manufactured kit.
