How to trellis tomatoes and cucumbers in a high tunnel: roller hooks, Florida weave, and crop load (sourced)

Growers search high tunnel trellis, high tunnel tomato hooks, lower and lean, Florida weave vs string trellis, and cucumber netting when the vines outgrow the hoop. This page is the how-to sibling — overhead support wire or a crop-support bar, roller hooks with twine, tomato clips, polypropylene twine, Florida weave versus string trellis, cucumber netting, and the load caveat: the hoop frame and purlins must be rated for crop load. Ask the kit manufacturer. Season, shade, and drip for tomatoes stay on high-tunnel tomatoes. Horizontal 6-inch flower support stays on high-tunnel cut flowers. It is not a commercially manufactured high-tunnel kit and not a USDA payment schedule.

Why vines need a dedicated support line

A hoop is a weather roof. It is not automatically a tomato rack. UNH puts the overhead line at least eight feet above the row and says a plant can weigh 30 pounds or more at peak fruit set — that is UNH’s sentence, not a Tunnel Spec load table. If the frame carries that weight, it has to be strong enough. Ask the manufacturer of your kit.

Establish a strong overhead support at least 8’ above each row of tomatoes. This can be a heavy-gauge wire or metal conduit, but consider that each plant may weigh 30 lbs or more at peak fruit set, so be sure that it is secured firmly and can support this weight. If the tunnel frame is supporting the weight of the crop, it is important that it is strong enough to do this.

When purchasing a tunnel, choose as much structural reinforcement as possible to support snow loads and high winds. Be sure to account for primary crop load (tomatoes, hanging baskets, etc.) This may include the size of structural pipes, number of trusses and truss bracing, wind / corner bracing, and strong purlin to bow connections (cross braces and through-bolting vs. strapping.)

Both gothic and hoop-house tunnels allow for vertical trellising common for indeterminate tomatoes and European cucumbers, via cables or purlins. Models that aren’t ready-to-go for vertical trellising can be retrofitted quickly. Multi-bay units lack the overhead structure for vertical trellis systems. These structures are better suited to crops that can be horizontally trellised such as determinate tomatoes, peppers or eggplants or not trellised at all such as strawberries or sweet cherries.

Overhead wire, crop bar, roller hooks, and clips

UNH’s overhead system is a heavy-gauge wire or metal conduit, one string per plant, tomato clips at the base then every 12–18 inches under a leaf — or wrap the vine if the twine is not too taut. For a multi-month crop, UNH names specialized rollers and hooks so you can pay out twine and lower the plants.

The overhead trellis system is appropriate for indeterminate varieties. It is best suited to tomatoes grown indoors (e.g. in high tunnels), where overhead support infrastructure already exists. This system is more labor-intensive than the basket weave system, but it results in sustained yields over a longer period of time. If you intend to keep the tomatoes growing for several months, specialized rollers and hooks are available to hold a length of twine at the top of the support, so that you can increase the length of twine and lower the plants gradually as they grow.

Source: Sideman, University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension — Pruning Tomato Plants. Clip start and spacing: Begin supporting tomatoes once they have set the first flower clusters, or when they are at least 12” tall. Use a tomato clip to attach the twine to the tomato at the base of the plant without girdling the plant. A plant will usually be well supported by clips placed every 12-18” along the vine. Be sure to attach clips beneath a leaf rather than beneath a fruit cluster, to avoid damaging the cluster. Wrap option: If the twine is not too taut, another option is to wrap the plant around the twine as it grows, so the twine holds the plant up with fewer or no clips. One leader is the usual recommendation: Trellised tomatoes can be trained to one or two leaders. One leader is most commonly recommended.

Use Roller-Hook® for indeterminate tomato, cucumber, melon and watermelon. Train plants to one leader if using strings or the Roller-Hook® system.

Source: North Carolina A&T State University Cooperative Extension — High Tunnel Farming. That PDF uses the Roller-Hook® name for the spool hardware. Braces and end-wall boards: Braces in high tunnels are used to support wires for the Roller-Hook® trellis system (top). Anchor boards can also be added to end walls for support of trellises (bottom).

Lower-and-lean

When the plant reaches the overhead support, the top can be removed to stop further growth, or the vine can be lowered to allow the plant to continue to grow. The “lean and lower” approach involves releasing more twine while moving the top twine away from the plant, which allows the plant to gently lean without breaking.

Source: Sideman, University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension — Pruning Tomato Plants.

These indeterminate plants are managed using a trellis system including a top supporting cable and individual strings and clips to support each plant. Once the plant top reaches the cable and after the bottom leaves are removed, the plants are leaned and lowered.

Hoop house growers utilize a similar trellis system called the “Lower and Lean” system. This system is unique in that there is no fixed amount of twine between the anchor point on the top and the tomato plant. Rather, a spool (various options available on the market) feeds out more twine, which causes the stem of the tomato plant to sag. This is useful to keep the top of the tomato plant within easy reach while preventing the tomato from making contact with the soil (where potential soil pathogens exist).

UAEX MP586: lean-and-lower canopies need more sidewall height than a determinate Florida-weave crop. Indeterminate tomatoes, for example, trellised using the lean and lower training method will need more sidewall height to accommodate their canopies compared to a determinate tomato on a Florida weave trellis. Florida weave versus string trellis

The basket weave (sometimes called ‘Florida weave’) system uses about half as many stakes as individual staking, and also saves labor. This system is best suited to determinate varieties of tomatoes, but can be used for indeterminate varieties if the tops are trimmed once they reach the top of the stakes.

Source: Sideman, University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension — Pruning Tomato Plants. How to weave: Tie sturdy, untreated twine at one end of the row, about 12” up from the soil level. Weave twine in a figure eight pattern between tomato plants, wrapping twice around each stake down the row. After reaching the end stake, weave twine back up the row in the opposite direction, alternating with the first strand so each plant stem has a twine on both sides, holding it up. Layers: As plants grow, weave another layer of twine every 6-8 inches to keep plants well supported. Four layers of twine will support most varieties.

Tomatoes in high tunnels or open shade-covered structures may be grown using either the Florida stake and weave method or a trellis system, depending on the type of cultivar being grown and the length of season the tomatoes will be grown. Both training systems are being successfully used in Florida. If a determinate cultivar is grown and the producer is growing two crops per year (spring and fall), the Florida stake and weave system is very common. If indeterminate cultivars are grown over a long extended season, a trellis system may be preferred.

Source: Thaxton and Hochmuth, UF/IFAS — Tomato Cultivar Selection Considerations for Open-Field and Protected Culture in North Florida (HS1273). Habit line: Determinate cultivars will be small, bush plants and are easier to train with the standard Florida stake and weave system. Indeterminate cultivars will need a training system that may involve using high stakes (6–8 feet tall) with a Florida stake and weave system or using a trellis and overhead cable system. UGA: stake-and-weave is less infrastructure, more stringing — Growers may also choose to grow indeterminate tomatoes in high tunnels using a traditional stake-and-weave method, similar to what is used in field production. This method requires less initial infrastructure than a trellis system with strings and hooks but will require frequent stringing to keep plants upright. — and determinate plants are not a one-leader crop: Determinate varieties shouldn’t be pruned to a central leader as their yields will suffer since they are not meant for this type of production.

Use tomato stakes (Florida Weave) for determinate tomato, eggplant and bell pepper. When using the Florida Weave system, prune off suckers up to the first fruit cluster, then leave remaining suckers unpruned.

Source: North Carolina A&T State University Cooperative Extension — High Tunnel Farming. UVM on T-posts and not mixing habits in one weave: The “Florida Weave” system is foolproof and economical. Basically, twine is used to weave among the tomato plants and the ends are anchored to a set of T-posts. Conduit-plus-clips option: Tomatoes are planted in line with the horizontal conduit and are supported by the twine using tomato clips. So, as the tomatoes grow, you simply add another clip to the line every foot or so.

Cucumber netting and one-leader

Cucumbers grown in high tunnels are generally trellised. Trellising is a good way to efficiently use space in high tunnels, eliminating yellow ground spots that develop when fruit rests on the soil surface and can result in straighter fruit. Additionally, it encourages airflow throughout the planting, which is a good strategy to avoid/prevent some diseases.

Source: Sánchez, Pennsylvania State University Extension — Growing Cucumbers in High Tunnels. Netting: In one strategy, secure plastic netting (for example, Hortonova netting) or wire mesh to support posts. Plants are allowed to grow up the netting or wire mesh without any clips, ties, or other means of securing them. Additionally, little, if any, pruning is done. This method is commonly used for slicing cucumbers as they produce fruit on lateral branches. Single-string: Another strategy is single-string trellising. This is commonly used for Beit Alpha types. If you are growing European types, this system would also work. In this system, plants are pruned to a single stem and trained to a single trellis string. Wrap or clip: Plants can either be wrapped to the trellis string or secured with plant clips or both.

Trellis netting (Fig. 9) and one-leader (Fig. 10) systems are commonly used for growing cucumbers in high tunnels. When cucumbers are grown with a trellis netting system, side-shoots within 2 feet of the ground have to be removed to encourage vines to climb on the netting. Trellis netting may be supported by metal poles or hang from overhead cables.

Source: Guan, Ingwell, and Egel, Purdue Extension ID-521-W — High Tunnel Cucumber Production Guide. Height / labor / disease: The taller the netting system, the longer the cucumber plants can grow and produce fruit before they are too big to manage. Labor savings is the major advantage of using the trellis netting system. However, this system makes it more difficult to control insect pests and foliar diseases, and the duration of harvest is limited by the height of the netting. One-leader vs tomato: Growing cucumbers with the one-leader and leaf removal system is similar to growing indeterminate tomatoes with a lower and lean technique. If plants are well managed, it can support up to six months of harvests. Keep 5 feet of leaf: A general rule is to keep at least 5 feet of leaf-bearing stem. Weekly work: As the main stem of a cucumber plant can easily grow more than one foot per week, pruning and trellising plants has to be conducted weekly if not more frequently.

Horizontal 6-inch flower layers are a different job. They stay on high-tunnel cut flowers.

EQIP pays for the structure, not the twine

Roller hooks, clips, twine, cable, turnbuckles, and cucumber netting sit outside the High Tunnel System Initiative payment. Confirm with your NRCS district conservationist. Tunnel Spec does not invent a dollar.

Under the High Tunnel System Initiative, financial assistance is provided only for the structure itself. Electricity, venting systems, lighting, etc. can be installed providing the additions meets manufacturer’s designs and specifications. However, the grower is responsible for those costs.

FAQ

Does EQIP pay for high-tunnel trellis supplies?
The High Tunnel System Initiative FAQ says financial assistance is provided only for the structure itself; the grower is responsible for electricity, venting, lighting, and similar additions. Tomato hooks, clips, twine, cable, turnbuckles, and cucumber netting sit with those grower costs. Pennsylvania’s seasonal high-tunnel page says producers can install heating, ventilation, or electrical systems at their own expense — same structure-only split. This page does not invent a payment dollar. Confirm with your county NRCS office. See what EQIP will not pay for.
Florida weave or string trellis in a high tunnel?
UNH: basket weave (Florida weave) is best suited to determinate tomatoes; overhead trellis is for indeterminate plants in a tunnel and is more labor-intensive but holds yield longer. UF/IFAS HS1273: determinate + two crops per year often uses Florida stake and weave; long-season indeterminate prefers a top cable with strings and clips. UGA B1552: stake-and-weave needs less initial infrastructure than strings and hooks, but more frequent stringing. N.C. A&T: Florida Weave for determinate tomato / eggplant / pepper; Roller-Hook for indeterminate tomato, cucumber, melon, and watermelon. UAEX MP586: lean-and-lower needs more sidewall height than a determinate Florida-weave crop. Crop notes stay on high-tunnel tomatoes.
What is lower-and-lean (lean and lower)?
UNH: when the vine reaches the overhead support, release more twine and move the top attachment so the plant leans without breaking. UF/IFAS: after bottom leaves come off, plants are leaned and lowered. UVM (June 2025): hoop-house growers use a spool so there is no fixed length of twine; the stem sags, keeping the top in reach and off the soil. Purdue ID-521: cucumber one-leader plus leaf removal is similar to tomato lower-and-lean; keep at least 5 feet of leaf-bearing stem. Specialized rollers and hooks are the hardware UNH names for a multi-month crop.
Can I hang the crop from the hoop frame or purlins?
UNH: a heavy-gauge wire or conduit at least 8 feet above the row; each plant may weigh 30 lbs or more at peak fruit set; if the tunnel frame carries that weight, it must be strong enough. That 30-lb line is UNH’s sentence, not a Tunnel Spec load table. UVM Callahan: when buying a tunnel, account for primary crop load (tomatoes, hanging baskets) in pipe size, trusses, wind bracing, and purlin-to-bow connections. Cornell: gothic and hoop-house tunnels can take vertical trellis on cables or purlins; multi-bay units lack that overhead structure. UKY: tunnel-supported trellising should consider extra diagonal bracing and rafter cross ties. Ask the kit manufacturer for the crop-load rating on your model. This page does not invent PSF, pounds per hoop, or a kit crop-load number.
How do I trellis cucumbers in a high tunnel?
PSU: high-tunnel cucumbers are generally trellised for space, straighter fruit, and airflow. Two common systems: plastic netting (PSU names Hortonova) or wire mesh on posts with little pruning — typical for slicing types that fruit on laterals; or single-string for Beit Alpha / European types, pruned to one stem, wrapped or clipped. Purdue ID-521: netting may hang from poles or overhead cables; drop side-shoots in the first 2 feet; one-leader is more labor (stems can grow more than a foot a week) and can run up to six months if managed. N.C. A&T: plastic mesh, cattle panel, or strings; Roller-Hook for one-leader cucumbers. Horizontal 6-inch flower netting stays on high-tunnel cut flowers.
Do commercially manufactured kits include trellis hardware?
The 9-kit index is frames, film, and (on some SKUs) roll-up sides or end walls. Bootstrap Farmer sells a trellis bar kit, Qlipr clips, a Qlipr system, and 6-inch netting on separate manufacturer pages tonight. Those are not extra rows on the kit index. Confirm crop-load language on the kit vendor page for your model. Tomato season, shade, and drip stay on high-tunnel tomatoes.
